“Weak governments are run by terrorists. Strong governments are run by armies and intelligence agencies. Opponents get equally dead.”
Kanenas
On his way to work in Manhatten, Titus Carneades is saved from a traffic death by a mysterious young woman, a member of the Apologizers. This group believes that God has given up on humanity and must be lured back by good deeds. Against his will, Titus is drawn into a high-profile Arab terrorist kidnapping of a famous Chinese technologist in which the young woman has interfered – seeking to become a surrogate hostage!
Both fascinated and troubled by the woman, he has deemed the Benevolent Pumpkin, Titus volunteers to help government agents resolve the crisis. He embarks on a dangerous odyssey of the unexpected where he encounters Kanenas, the suave, avuncular, and strangely reluctant founder of the Apologizers; a massive
underground security complex beneath the ruins of the World Trade Center; and a twisting world of confused bureaucratically-designed tunnels built under the Hudson River. His adventure brings him to a safe house masquerading as a defunct museum; and a perilous train ride to link up with a terror cell.
For the reluctant Titus, his trajectory propels him to a rendezvous with life, death, and history in the green wilds of New York’s Hudson Valley.
